Following is a list of the meetings of the Chicago Society for Space Studies which were held in 2018. CSSS members are notified by email of CSSS meetings and sponsored events. CSSS membership is free so there is no reason not to join. For details, see our membership page.

The 2018 Space Year in Review Program and Annual Space Party
Date: Sunday, December 2, 2018

Description: The annual CSSS year-end party includes light refreshments, free materials, and the 2018 Space Year in Review presentation given by CSSS Vice President Larry Boyle. The presentation, which starts at 1:00pm, will be followed by general discussion. The library opens at 12:00 noon and all are encouraged to arrive before the start of the presentation.

The History of the Universe Starting with the Big Bang

Description: This meeting of Chicago Society for Space Studies features CSSS Speaker Larry Bartoszek giving his presentation The History of the Universe Starting with the Big Bang.The talk will describe how the universe changed from moment to moment starting with the earliest things we can know about the Big Bang. Work from experiments such as COBE, WMAP, Planck and LIGO will be used to show how we know things that happened “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” Larry will give us a broad overview of modern cosmology, showing the successes of the Standard model of cosmology as well as pointing out the controversies and unknowns. Dark matter and Dark Energy will be discussed, and their roles in the evolving Universe.

The presentation, which begins at 1:00pm, will be preceeded by an informal members meeting which will begin at 12:30pm. Library doors open at 12:00pm.

Description: This meeting of Chicago Society for Space Studies features CSSS Vice President Larry Boyle giving his presentation The History of the Space Program. Larry’s presentation begins with a brief look at the pre-1957 history of space exploration and goes on to cover highlights of manned space exploration from 1957 through the Apollo moon landings, as well as the planetary exploration missions. The presentation will examine the roles of the United States and Russia, and both the increasing number of national as well as non-governmental (private) participants involved in today’s space economy.

The presentation, which begins at 1:00pm, will be preceeded by an informal members meeting which will begin at 12:30pm. Doors open at 12:00pm.
