Jim Kovac

Jim Kovac
A space exploration enthusiast from an early age, Jim Kovac grew up during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo mission years. He has watched with interest as exciting discoveries from NASA’s planetary missions have been made, and anticipates the potential of further exploration and discovery as current and future space missions unfold. Jim is a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador and has joined the Speakers Bureau of the Chicago Society for Space Studies.

Mr. Kovac currently provides the following presentations:

Wonders of Webb: Exploring the Universe with JWST (Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 as separate presentations)
Following the successful launch and deployment of the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have explored new vistas and aspects of the Universe made possible with this remarkable instrument. Join an exploration with a new eye on the Universe.

New Horizons: Exploring Pluto and Beyond
Join the initial exploration of the Pluto System made possible by a remarkable spacecraft and mission team, New Horizons, on the culmination of its 9-year voyage. We’ll consider what we’ve learned as a result of this incredible mission to Pluto and beyond!

Fantastic Space Discoveries: The Search for Planet 9
Join a quest to discover whether our Solar System has another massive planet beyond Neptune. We’ll consider the evidence gathered thus far that hints at its presence and discuss the possible nature of this predicted outer planet.

Mysteries of the Cosmos – Life Beyond Earth: Searching for Alien Life
We are either alone in the Universe or we are not; either possibility is overwhelming! Join the exploration of the fundamental question about the pervasiveness of life — is it common or rare? This presentation will extend the search to extreme micro-environments on our home planet Earth and consider the implications for life on other worlds.

Fantastic Space Discoveries: Structures of the Outer Solar System
As observational techniques and instrumentation have advanced, astronomers have gained insight into the nature of our Solar System. We have found that the system extends far beyond the planets including structures not anticipated. Our exploration will take us beyond the planets to examine the Sun’s extended sphere of influence.

Cassini/Huygens Mission to Saturn
Join an exploration of the sixth planet from the Sun — Saturn — made possible by the Cassini/Huygens spacecraft, collecting data over its 13-year mission. We will discuss the history of Saturn observations, the spacecraft, and some discoveries about the gas giant, its dynamic system of rings, as well as future plans for exploring the intriguing planet-sized moon, Titan.

Extreme Exoplanets (Parts 1 and 2 as separate presentations)
As the catalog of confirmed exoplanets has grown, astronomers have recognized the wide range of projected environmental characteristics that render these worlds truly unique and challenging for life as we know it. Join the continuing exploration as we examine bizarre exoplanets that differ significantly from our home world.
